Bada Book, Bada Boom

Be decisive, and be rewarded. It never hurts to state the obvious, especially if you say it obliquely, in a not-so-obvious way. And making it snappy, so it helps sell an idea or product? Sheer genius!

And what, you may ask, does any of that have to do with mindfulness and meditation? Well, the first thing I'll do is sit with that question for a few minutes--quietly, in stillness. And voila--an answer appears! Funny how that works.

First, the part about being decisive (which is something that good lawyers tend to be): Decisiveness flows from confidence in our own mind. Mindfulness and meditation are about better knowing our mind. And better knowing our mind is likely to have a knock-on effect in terms of our confidence, so it's reasonable to conclude that mindfulness and meditation can help us become more decisive--not to mention, better deciders! I wonder if W (dubbaya) was a meditator?

So, what about the issue of reward? What does that have to do with mindfulness and meditation? Well, if virtue is it's own reward, then the same can be said about mindfulness and meditation: Stress relief? Check. Anxiety management? Check. Burnout salve? Check. Improved self-regulation? Check. Improved resilience (both physical and emotional)? Check, and check. Distraction control? Check. Increased focus? Check. And there are plenty of studies to back up each of those claims!

Of course, neither mindfulness nor meditation are a panacea for all personal or professional ailments-- the list of documented benefits is long, however, the list of potential challenges is longer. But if responsibly designed programs can be conceived and implemented to begin addressing our numerous challenges, why wouldn't we do that?

Bada Book, Bada Boom! Or Bada Boom, Bada Bing (if you're a Godfather fan). Or, just plain Bada Bing (if you're a Sopranos fan). Whatever your preference, mindfulness and meditation can improve your well-being, and provide ample reward--both personally, and professionally!
